Changes in the View of Women
Before the 1920's women were expected to keep the home and care for the family. A woman's life was carefully watched like a bug under a microscope. After the passing of the 19th amendment, the freedom of women changed. They were able to vote, giving them a voice and a more equal pedestal in society.
Instead of being forced to follow all the rules of the man in the house, women now felt that they had a voice in their futures and could control their lives more easily. Women were seen as more "out there" and fun than they used to be. They began cutting their hair and shortening their skirts. New dances became popular as well as drinking and smoking. These more radical women of this time period were called Flappers.

Gains of the Women's Movement
During this time, women became more determined to get control over their own lives. Organizations for women were formed such as the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). The NAWSA helped women to let the authorities know they meant business. They organized functions such as riots to get through to them.
Women would live life more to the fullest in order to get people to believe that they were not inferior. Some of the actions they took included cutting their hair, changing their dress styles, drinking, smoking, partying, and doing anything they could that men could.

Progressive Era vs. 1920's
Before the 1920's women were expected to keep the house, even in the few years leading up to the decade. They received little education, usually only to the age of 12. Because they had little education, getting a good paying job, if they needed one, was extremely difficult. Clothing also changed drastically between the decades.
During the 1920's women would fight for more education, and in return better jobs. Dresses began to rise to or above the knee and hair was cut short. Women would no longer take into consideration the feelings of others; they were out for their futures.

Thinking Like a Historian
Differing Perspectives
Some perspectives that may have been shut out or not really expressed during this time was that of men. A lot of times people focus on how the women felt during this time and how the passage of the 19th amendment and the gaining of many freedoms was. Men do not really shine during this time. They just sort of hang out in the background, so to speak. People today may view this time period as a fun time where everything seemed perfect and right. This was not really true though. There was a lot of crime and killing and slowly the country was digging itslef into a deep hole financially because it could not handle it, which would eventually lead to the crash of the stock market and the decline of the nation's economy.
